Review of Hilton San Diego/Del Mar Hotel

Our family has recently spent a very packed 48 hours in San Diego (as part of our South Western USA road trip).   Attractions in our San Diego itinerary were a considerable distance from each other, so choosing where to stay was a “strategic” decision for us.

2 Days in San Diego with Kids

We chose Hilton San Diego Del Mar for two reasons: its location in the Del Mar area and  our familiarity with the brand. Hilton San Diego Del Mar was in the middle of the “circle” of our activities in the area – and within 12-20 miles away from all points on our itinerary: the beaches (Del Mar beach is a mile away and La Jolla is 12 miles away), Legoland California (13 miles away) and San Diego city center (20 miles away).   It is conveniently located right off highway 1-5 S.  I do have to note that nearby race track and Del Mar fairgrounds – while being popular attraction points for many area visitors – may produce some traffic when exiting the property.  As to the brand, I don’t make it a secret that we are a family of avid Hilton reward points collectors.

Hilton San Diego Del Mar is a slightly older low-rise Hilton property offering everything you would expect from a Hilton: large rooms, comfortable beds, spacious lobby with modern décor, and a full service restaurant.

Our room

Even with our busy travel itineraries, we always try to find time to relax at our hotel in the afternoon. Having an opportunity to splash in a hotel pool and soak tired muscles in a hot tub is always welcomed by everyone in the family.   A large courtyard of Hilton Del Mar was well appointed with patio furniture and greenery and had a good size pool and a hot tub.

There is so much to see and to do in the area that I hardly saw anybody using the pool!

There is an on-site full service restaurant which was buzzing with indoor and outdoor activity in the evenings (we had a quick lunch there once).

Official Hilton San Diego Del Mar daily rates start at $169 per room, but I saw even better deals on some popular hotel booking sites.

Unless you plan to spend all your time in Del Mar, having a car is a must to reach San Diego attractions from Hilton Del Mar (hotel does offer a free shuttle within 5-mile radius and can take you to Del Mar beach and a shopping plaza).
